Transport Challenges

A key transport challenge facing Cambridgeshire is the timing of strategic projects compared to the timing of major developments - ensuring the right projects come on-stream at the right time.

Cambridgeshire Horizons works closely with the Local Authorities, Highways Agency and other transport providers to ensure transport infrastructure projects happen in tandem with major new developments to reduce the negative transport impact on the existing community.

Over and above the timing of developments, accessing appropriate funding is the key challenge to making projects happen. Whilst some projects have already received Central Government funding, more is required to bring the entire network up to standard.

The Local Authorities are currently reviewing the potential to access the Transport Innovation Fund by implementing congestion charging in Cambridge as a potential option for gaining much needed funding. A Commission of key public and private sector partners is in the process of being set up to jointly come up with recommendations for an innovative and far-reaching transport strategy for the County.
